Teen Girls in Paris

L to R: Jazmyne, Chemere, Kamryn & Lauren…in Paris
Photo +Tracey Friley
I took 4 girls and 1 college senior to Paris this summer (July 2014) for a 2-week travel abroad experience like no other. The parents paid some and I paid some. As is the case with The Passport Party Project, it is my way of giving back. Read more here.

2013-14 National Geographic Traveler of the Year

I am proud and humbled to announce that I have been named as one of National Geographic Traveler's "2013 Travelers of the Year" for my work with The Passport Party Project. Do you believe it?!?!? I am overwhelmed with gratitude. To be in the company of so many thoughtful travelers is quite the compliment. Click here for the profile. =)

When I got the email months ago while out of the country that I was being vetted, I was SO honored. I tried not to think about winning either. Who nominated me? I thought. How did this happen? And then I got word that I had actually been selected. Seriously? I wondered and squealed at the same time. Is this a mistake? But, alas no. It wasn't a mistake after all. The Passport Party Project matters. The Passport Party Project is not a mistake.

And so. If you think that encouraging newly-minted teen passport holders to travel with heart is inspiring, please consider voting for me for People's Choice Traveler of the Year as an added bonus. It would mean a lot. You can vote once daily through October 25, 2013.

Thank you for your ongoing support and encouragement... from the bottom of my heart.

He who returns from a journey
is not the same as he who left. ~Chinese proverb

I don't know if it's because I want it to be so, or if it is actually so, but the girls on the Passport to Belize trip looked different when they were leaving to go back to the U.S. today than they did when we first met up in Dallas to take this journey together.  Perhaps they were just a bit shy when we all first got together?  (The group dynamic can be a little intimidating sometimes.) Or perhaps I'm just hopeful crazy.  Either way, I'm betting there was some small shift that occurred in each of them after this 7-day Central American adventure that will manifest more brilliantly over time, as it was their very first international travel experience and their very first passport stamp.  But that's the whole point, isn't it? #changeisgood

12 year old Lyanna shows off her very first passport stamp.
A part of me wants to keep the details of our Passport to Belize trip private and between the 13* of us like it's some big secret or something, and another part of me wants to share every single moment, but the truth is that I haven't really processed my feelings yet. They've only been gone for three hours and I'm tired from crying, tired from getting up every day before 6am to start the day, and just tired from being tired.  I should probably take a nap, but I'm too happy to sleep.

Me with the girls (and with passport in hand) hamming it up...
Right now, all I know is that they told me they didn't want to go home today; that a major highlight of the trip wasn't necessarily the Belize Zoo, zip lining, cave tubing (still can't believe I had to be rescued), snorkeling with sharks or climbing the Mayan ruins, but instead was spending the day playing with the kids at Liberty Children's Home, an orphanage in Ladyville, Belize; and I love them.  Like crazy.

Liberty Children's Home
All photos: @TraceyFriley
Change - the kind that matters - takes place from the inside out; so I probably don't look any different than I did when I embarked on this journey either, but I am different.  That, I know for sure.  It just might take me a few days to figure out how.

Tracey is still in Belize; then bound for Barcelona for a little R&R after a quick stop in the States.

Shannon points out Belize...
You can check out more photos from the trip on Facebook and I'll be uploading all of them on Flickr real soon.

Check out the #GProject for info about Phase 2.

While no official fundraising campaign has been kicked off, if you are an individual or corporation that would like to help underserved girls ages 11-15 by making a donation, please click here.  If you are a corporation or travel brand that would like to know how else you can help, please click here.

* Six girls (out of the 100 that received their first passports via Phase 1) won an all-expenses paid trip to Belize, Central America to get their first passport stamps and to start their journey to global citizenship. In an effort avoid liability, the one thing during this entire initiative that Expedia insisted on was that a parent or guardian accompany each minor instead of me leading the group myself.  Including parents, there were 13 of us in the group.  And yes, some of the parents have experienced a personal shift of their own as well. #goodstuff

Do Something

As much as I don't like the paper.li newsletters that show up in my Twitter Mentions feed every few days, every other one I get garners a quick peek.  This morning, I took a peek at my social media friend Chantilly's The Multicultural Families Daily paper.li...and I'm glad I did.

Chantilly shared The #UnselfishSelfies Project from VH1's Do Something Awards and it didn't take me long to start tagging photos on Instagram.

In a nutshell, VH1 is asking that we all post an #UnselfishSelfie in order to raise money for charity.  For every photo, they're donating $1.  So far, I have tagged 30 photos of Passport Party Project advocates on Instagram holding up their passports with the #UnselfishSelfie hashtag because those that supported the #GProject contest (we're a finalist!) were being unselfish indeed.  And then I logged on to Twitter and told VH1 what I did. =)
@VH1 Hecka #UnselfishSelfie tags on @instagram from #PassportPartyProject advocates encouraging teen travel & global citizenship! #DSAWARDS

Unfortunately, every "passport photo of support" that I collected did not get uploaded to my Instagram account, so if you don't see your photo under the #DSAWARDS hashtag on Instagram, please either re-take or take an #UnselfishSelfie holding your passport, upload it to Instagram, and tag it with #UnselfishSelfie #DSAWARDS and a note that says "I support teens with passports & global citizenship via The #PassportPartyProject," and maybe your photo will be selected to be shown on the VH1 Do Something Awards airing on July 31.  At a minimum, we will have raised some money for charity, and that sounds hecka good to me. =)

You in?

P.S. Get your passport-carrying teens in on the fun too!

And The Winners Are....

First things first: Judging the Passport to Belize contest was hard.  The judges and I wanted everyone who entered to win. We're travelers, so we love the idea of giving the gift of travel to everyone.  For us, it is like giving a part of ourselves.  If we could put the world in a box and give it to all of the girls, we would.

And yet, it wouldn't be a contest if there weren't people who won and people who lost, right? It's one of those disappointing life lessons, but definitely not the end of the world.  So April, Shelley, Ana, Expedia and I would like to say a special Thank You to all of the girls that put their hearts into entering The Passport Party Project's Passport to Belize contest. We believe that your shiny new little blue travel booklet is merely the beginning of your journey to global citizenship.

Please join me in congratulating the winners of The Passport Party Project's Passport to Belize contest!

Honorable Mention

Excerpt from Jazmyne's essay:
What Global Citizenship Means To Me
How many people can a person meet in their lifetime? I want to be given the opportunity to find out.
There are over 7 billion people in the world. Global citizenship is not just about being 1 of 7 billion people; it is a way of thinking and becoming part of this vast sea of humanity. In my lifetime I want to understand the world, not only by travel, but also by fully embracing and experiencing the different cultures the world has to offer.
I believe the first step to becoming a global citizen is...empathy.

National Volunteer Week: It Takes a Village

Rwandan Orphan Quilting Project Greeting Card
According to Points of Light, April 21-27, 2013 is National Volunteer Week.  According to me in my role as founder and Executive Director of The Passport Party Project and its newest offspring, every week is National Volunteer Week.

There is no doubt in my mind that Phase I of The Passport Party Project would not have been as successful as it has been without the generous volunteers that donated their time, their venues, and their ideas to encourage tw/een girls to dream, travel and get their very first passports.  Yes indeed.  It takes a village.

I'd like you to meet them all:

Me and April
April Thompson of Absolute Travel Addict (pictured above) has not only volunteered at three Passport Parties (Los Angeles, Chicago and Atlanta), but she donated money out of her own pocket and offered her assistance even before Expedia came into the picture. She has been there from the start.  April is one of five judges for The Passport Party Project's contest to Belize and the Associate Director of Teen Travel Summit & Extravaganza.  More importantly, April is my friend. My chariot awaits.
Brown Palace Hotel
The Denver Situation was a trip.  The Denver Passport Party was scheduled at the beautiful Brown Palace Hotel (thanks to an intro from Kim Mance) and then I had to re-schedule because I got sick and just couldn't get on a plane.  I had no volunteers (although two volunteered and then backed out) and when I rescheduled, the generous Brown Palace simply did not have availability.  The decision to use SAME Café was ultimately a God-send as it sent a message of philanthropy to the girls in attendance, which is in alignment with my personal objectives and those of The Passport Party Project.  Because I had already shipped supplies to Brown Palace far in advance, the generous concierge was kind enough to offer me transportation to the event venue along with a lovely afternoon cocktail.  I thought that was extra nice.

Contrary to some of the posts and articles I saw on the Internet, Passport Day in the USA 2013 was not cancelled.  There was a sequester, which caused all of the government passport facilities to be closed, but there were still plenty of non-State passport acceptance facilities that participated in this annual passport celebration, and Passport Party Project volunteers - who got a little taste of how difficult it is to give away free passports - were out in Detroit, Philadelphia, Chicago, NYC, DC and Los Angeles getting it done!

To all of the volunteers that made The Passport Party Project a dream come true for 100 girls, to Adam Anderson, TBEX, and to my friends and mother who listened to my rants and my cheers; and especially to my husband, who - as usual - gives me everything I need....

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!
